Lord & Burnham
(Irvington, New York)
Endicott Community Greenhouse Manufacture
Frederick Lord established Lord's Horticultural Manufacturing Company in Syracuse, New York in 1856. Seeking closer proximity to his major clients in the lower Hudson Valley, Lord relocated the business to Irvington in 1870. After partnering with his son-in-law William Addison Burnham in 1872, the company was renamed the Lord & Burnham Company. Situated advantageously near the Hudson River, Lord & Burnham became a leading builder of various greenhouses and conservatories, including a conservatory at San Francisco's Golden State Park, the Conservatory of Flowers, the Phipps Conservatory, and the conservatory at The New York Botanical Gardens. The company expanded its business beyond greenhouse construction as it became involved in developing a line of boilers designed to provide heating sources for greenhouses. During World War I and World War II, the company contributed to wartime production, manufacturing items such as hand grenades and pontoon bridges. Lord & Burnham introduced the building of steel-framed greenhouses in the United States. The company ceased operations in 1987.
The Endicott Community Greenhouse is a(n) historic structure and architecturally noteworthy...it is a 1925 'Lord & Burnham' structure. The L&B company is no longer in existence, but there are existing companies that offer repair parts and maintenance.
